2017 – Theater Trip #1 – Assassin’s Creed

Maybe I should have watched the game at some point? (as much as my kids have played it, I’ve always been a Nintendo Only gamer… ZELDA!!) While I found the movie visually stunning, I kept feeling like I was missing something.  The incredible cinematography made it really FEEL like I was in a video game, almost 3-d like but NOT  (I can see where some people might get a bit queasy at first).  Fortunately, there is a LOT of action and a shirtless Michael Fassbender so it was totally watchable, too.

KatNyp score:  C+

2016 – The Movies Sorta Sucked, too

So, this blog was supposed to be my resolution for 2016, but that didn’t happen so I will try again for 2017.  In the meantime, fell four short of 2015’s number to 57.  But I also found it NOT to be a stellar movie year overall.  There were a few I would have like to see, but the timing just didn’t work (Sully, BFG) but also more than a handful that I was expecting to enjoy much more than I did, and more than a few that I wish I could have my 90+ minutes of life back (Hail, Caesar! SUCKED).  And if anyone could explain Arrival to me, I would appreciate it, because it was like the first 45 minutes of 2001: A Space Odyssey when your’e thinking “WTF is going on here?” …. and that was the whole film.

Vintage Note: Seeing Labyrinth (TWICE even!!) and Never Ending Story on the big screen was great, but seeing Phantasm (the movie that started my love of good horror flicks) for the first time on the big screen since I was 14 was WICKED!!!

Favorite Film:  Hands down, Deadpool.  I can watch it from any point that I catch it at now on cable, and it both cracks me up and amazes me every time for how “in your FACE, Hollywood” it is.  This is the movie that you get to make when the studio is the one begging.  The opening credits were LITERALLY just the beginning.  Oh yeah … Ryan Reynolds …. nuff said.

Close Second: Rogue One.  Quite possibly the best one in the whole series.  Loved it.

Worst besides Hail, Caesar!: Tarzan.  There are times when a GORGEOUS shirtless man can save a movie.  This is NOT one of them.  Not even on mute.

#2 – Norm of the North

As seen on January 17, 2016 – Movie Buddy: Monkey – AMC Bowles Crossing

The best thing about this movie was that it was the first of the year with my grandson , one of my favorite movie buddies!  The second best thing was the amount of current pop music included in the soundtrack (Shut Up and Dance, Geronimo) that made Monkey happy.  There was a fair amount of seat dancing going on, which was far more entertaining than the movie itself.  Beyond that, it was not particularly original or entertaining.  The lemmings, however, were quite cute.  Definitely more the boy-humor than I would normally like.

On the KatNyp scale, I give it a 4 … not quite a full hairball, but no purring going on here.

I’m not quite sure what it is about the joining of Russel, Lawrence, Cooper and DeNiro, but it always ends up in a pretty good movie.

On the KatNyp scale – 7.5 – A good long purr.
